Walter D. “Bud” Johnson, 92, of Lutz, Florida, formerly of Greensburg, passed away Monday, June 23, 2025, at home. He was born April 22, 1933, in Youngwood, PA, a son of the late Chandler W. and Esther P. (Fox) Johnson. Bud dearly loved his siblings and their children. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray D. Johnson; his sisters, Betty Sandacz, Eleanor Oates, and Patricia Johnson; In-laws, Reuben, Lula, and Jack Bash, and Mary Lou Vogt; and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sisters, Doris Peterson, of Greensburg, and Mildred Kennelty, of Manilus, NY; and other nieces and nephews. He enjoyed traveling with his siblings and loved family get-togethers where he could always be counted on to tell a great story.
Bud graduated from Hurst High School in 1952 where he played football and basketball and was the Class President. His greatest high school achievement was meeting the love of his life, Phyllis Bash. After attending Saint Vincent College, Bud and Phyllis married and left for California where he served with the US Army during the Korean War. They were married for 62 years before Phyllis preceded him in death in 2016.
He started Johnson Brothers Heating with his brother Ray in the 1960s and The Kitchen Gallery in the 1970s. Prior to his retirement he operated Johnson Windows in Norvelt. Bud was a dedicated father. He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Glenn, and is survived by his children, Cary Johnson (Kimberly), of Sebastian, Florida, Linda Schimmel (Mike), of Lutz, Florida, and Eric Johnson (Michele), of Orlando, Florida. He loved to hunt with his boys and their friends. He never missed his children’s activities and proudly attended their graduations and military inductions. He adored his grandchildren, David B. Johnson (Ingrid), Alex Johnson (Morgan), Megan Schimmel, and Madelyn Schimmel.
He belonged to the Kecksburg Sportsman’s Club and a Card Club with lifelong friends. He was an avid horse racing fan and loved his time in Las Vegas with Phyllis. He spent his retirement as a handyman and is missed by his many neighbors who could always count on “Mr. Bud” to fix anything.
The family would like to thank Lifepath Hospice (especially Candice, Kay and Naomi) and special neighbors, Dave and Nancy Cheek, for their unwavering care and support over the past five years.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, June 29th at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity.
