Thomas E. Mehalic, Sr., 77, of Unity Township, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with ALS. He was born December 18, 1947, in Latrobe to the late George and Helen (Yuscanich) Mehalic.
Tom graduated from Derry Area Senior High School in 1965 and he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War with the 16th Engineers. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 982.
He retired from Lehigh Specialty Melting and was an avid Mr. Fixer. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing and he competed in the PA Senior Games for many years. However, his greatest passion was gardening, and he loved sharing his bounty with family and friends. He also spent countless hours along with his wife renovating their third-generation farmhouse. Above all else though, his greatest love was his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Person; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael and Mary E. Ulishney; brothers, George and John; sisters, Kathleen Bergman and Mary Pavlik; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James Bergman, Mary Elizabeth and Frank “Abe” Kmetz, Michael and Nancy Ulishney, and Tom Ulishney.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores (Ulishney) Mehalic; his children, Thomas, Jr. “Chip” and his wife, Alina, of Greensburg, and Anthony and his wife, Abigail, of Latrobe; his son-in-law, Chuck Person and his fiancé, Beckah and her son, Cole; and his grandchildren, Mary and Andy Person and Sadie and Grayson Mehalic. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph Mehalic (Betty), of Derry; a sister, Eleanor Yakel (Dave), of Virginia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Darlene Mehalic, Mary Mehalic, William Pavlik, Patricia Murtha, and Judy Ulishney; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 3 to 5 PM Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Monday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Tuesday in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 260 Bruno Rd., Greensburg with the Rev. Ken Zaccagnini as celebrant. Please go directly to the church.
