Richard E. "Dick" Miller

Richard E. “Dick” Miller, 87, of Latrobe, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 17, 2024.  He was born on April 18, 1936 in Jones Mills, son of the late Louther M. Miller and Estella G. (Hoyman) Miller.  He was preceded in death by his infant sister, his brother, and his kind-hearted grandson, Noah Penich.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia L. (Packe); son, Scott L. Miller of Latrobe; daughters Michelle Miller-Penich of New Stanton (Steve); Amy Singh (Amarjit) of Plum with whom he and Patricia have been residing. Grandchildren: Britini Kenney, Cody Miller, Vivian Miller, Ethan Penich, Jasmin Singh, and Karina Singh-Berry. Great Grandchildren: Jace, Malayna, Emmy, Nolan, Addy, and Penny. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jan Casale, and her husband Marshall “Bud”, of New Stanton.  Prior to retirement, Richard was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator.  He drove a school bus for several years and was particularly proud of his sixteen-year safe driving certificate.  Richard grew up on a farm in Donegal, and the country life nourished his love of tractors and gardening.  His passion was to tinker on tractors, paying mindful attention to even the smallest details. His first tractor was a 1936 Allis-Chalmers.  He had a fondness for John Deere equipment as well.  Richard participated in tractor pulls at local fairs over the years. He loved to watch tomatoes blossom from the seeds he had saved, and he cherished sharing his harvest with family and friends. He found joy in westerns, getting lost in the adventures of John Wayne. In recent years, he was a fan of “Working Horses With Jim” on YouTube.  He had a deep passion for instrumental country music, being especially captivated by Roy Clark’s mastery of the banjo. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Trauger (Thank you Pastor Frank for your lovely visits over the past year). He enjoyed helping others and he always took care to reach out via telephone to keep in touch with his family and friends. He believed in the gospel, and he urged his family to “Be Happy!”.  Richard overcame adversity, and he faced death with serenity, knowing that he would meet his Lord in the afterlife. Richard will be remembered for his kind heart and gentle blue eyes. His face beamed whenever he shared a story with others, which he did often. We will always be proud of him. His life is exemplified by the words of the Apostle Paul, who wrote: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Richard’s family has entrusted his care to Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home, Inc., Pleasant Unity. There will be no visitation. His final resting place will be Walnut Hill Cemetery, Donegal, adjacent to the land his grandparents farmed during his childhood. A private celebration of Richard’s life will take place on May 11th. We would especially like to thank his caregivers (Maddie and Natasha) and the team of Good Samaritan Hospice (Alexis, Camilea, and Kaitlyn) for their care and compassion. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in loving memory of Richard.  His wife and family would like to thank all his close relatives and friends who have made numerous calls and visits over the years.  Your friendship has meant so much to him.  He loves you all, and he has urged us all to be happy and cherish life, for it is a gift.
