Madeline A. Buchek, 105, of Greensburg, died Thursday, July 25, 2024, at her home. She was born October 16, 1918, in Hostetter, a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Sedlacko) Buchek. Madeline was a graduate of Greater Latrobe High School, Class of 1937. Madeline is a proud U.S. Marine veteran that joined because of and served during World War II. She began basic training at Camp Lejeune and went on to become a switchboard operator. She was one of the first females to join the Marines.
Her military switchboard experience prepared her for her career at Bell Telephone Company. After retirement, Madeline worked for Shenandoah Hotel in Las Vegas for 10 years, Macy’s for 30 years, and was the director of PBX Operations. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg and was a Lay Carmelite Nun in Las Vegas.
Madeline was a talented seamstress and enjoyed creative baking, flower arranging, and home decorating. Along with animals, she had a strong love for cooking.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Catherine Labuda, Margaret Loncharich, Delphina Hovanec, and Mary Jane Gritzer; niece and nephews, Duane Loncharich, Kevin Gritzer, Pamela Harr, and Terrence “Terry” Hovanec; and her dog, Toto.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Rick Labuda (Jean), Charlotte Hovanec Krajc (Patrick), Dina Zywicki (Jerry), Galen Gritzer (Ferna), Lisa Gorlick (Dave), and Janelle Snyder (Clyde); numerous great nieces and great nephews; four great-great nephews and one great-great niece.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Monday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg. Prayers will begin at 9 AM Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass to be celebrated at 9:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Church, Greensburg. Entombment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum with full military honors accorded by the VFW Post No. 33, Greensburg Honor Guard.
