Obituary

Joseph A. Harvey, Jr., 87, of Greensburg, a truly exceptional individual whose impact reached far and wide, peacefully passed away on August 9, 2023.  His unwavering spirit, remarkable accomplishments, and compassionate nature have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.  Dad was our hero and a faithful servant.  Born on February 24, 1936, Joe's enduring passion for sports fueled a lifelong flame, evident during high school where he thrived as a dedicated three-sport athlete—football, track and field, basketball—earning four consecutive years of honors. His unwavering commitment and remarkable prowess showcased his exceptional character. Joe's determination, skill and perseverance led to WPIAL and PIAA state championships in hurling discus, setting a precedent for collegiate success with a University of Pittsburgh scholarship. He later excelled at Slippery Rock in football, basketball, and track, where he met his love Verene Lozaw Harvey. Their 65-year partnership blossomed, marked by hard work, sports, and a grateful embrace of life's blessings.  For 35 impactful years, Joe shared his knowledge and passion as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Hempfield Area School District. He also took on roles as a football and track coach, mentoring and guiding young athletes to reach their full potential. Beyond the classroom and sports fields, Joe's interests and contributions were diverse. An NRA instructor and consultant for shooting sports, he co-authored a groundbreaking book on gun safety. Joe’s faith was a cornerstone of his life.  This was his inner fire, strength, discipline, humility and love were virtues he passed down to his family.  He taught steadfast and giving to us and all his students.  As a devout member of his church community, he served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Usher, and Memorial Choir Member. His leadership extended to his roles as President of the Parish council, where his selflessness and dedication to his faith were truly exemplified.  In the wider community, Joe was a devoted board member of the Knights of Columbus. His influence was also felt in his role as a board member of the Mutual Aid Ambulance Service and as a Hempfield Township Supervisor. His commitment to bettering the lives of those around him was a hallmark of his character.  Joseph Harvey’s life was a symphony of dedication, service, and achievement. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and inspiration. Joe's memory will forever be cherished by his three children, Elyse Wright and husband Kenneth of Sewickley, JoAnne Finoli and husband Richard of Greensburg, and Joseph Harvey and wife Susan of Sewickley, and devoted grandfather to Kris and Kevin Wright, Dr. Faith and Nicholas Finoli, and Morgan Harvey who find comfort in the enduring impact he had on their lives.
