Joseph E. Ferlin, 93, of Mammoth, died on December 29, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 17, 1931 in Baggaley, a son of the late Joseph A. and Marie (Yoboud) Ferlin. He joined the Army and became a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. He served in the Korean War and was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division of the 38th Field Artillery Battalion as chief of the firing battery and awarded two Bronze Stars and other decorations. Joe was honorably discharged as a sergeant first class. He worked as a brakeman on the railroads and as a heat-treater for Modulus Corporation until it closed. He then became a businessman owning and operating Ferlin’s Market in Mammoth and retired as a school bus driver. Joe was a devout member of St. Florian Roman Catholic Parish where he served on parish council and was an usher. Joe served Mt. Pleasant Township for over a 20-year period with positions on the planning commission and as an auditor. He was a member of American Legion Post 982 and United Club. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Frances (Pawlyshyn) Ferlin and children Michael (Marian) Ferlin, Mark (Kathy) Ferlin, Marcy (Larry) Adams, Monica (Simon) Chamberlain, and Mary (Mark) Mears, 13 grandchildren Michael (Katie) Ferlin, Mollie (Glenn) Repko, Alex (Elise) Wood, Adam (Janna) Wood, Emily (John) Tropeano, Abby Adams (Travis McDowell), Ally (Andrew) Gracie, Anny Adams, Jake (Erica) Ferlin, Emily (Jake) Shipley, Luke Chamberlain, Hannah Mears, and Brock Mears, 20 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. His surviving siblings include Donald (Billie) Ferlin, Rita Lucotch, Beverly (George) Spellman, Gerry (Tom) Trout, Arlene (Ron) Stahl. He is predeceased by his parents, grandson Tyler Mears, sisters Dolores Kepchia, Marguerite Kenney, Sister Lorraine Marie Ferlin, Ruth Ann Robinson, brothers John and Regis Ferlin and several brothers-in-law. Friends will be received from 5 to 7 PM Friday, January 3 at the Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home, Inc., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Saturday at St. Florian Roman Catholic Parish, United. Military honors by the Armbrust Veterans and interment will follow in St. Florian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township.
