John "Ike" Sphon Obituary

John J. “Ike” Sphon, 89, of Southwest Greensburg, died Saturday, May 22, 2021 in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.  He was born March 6, 1932 in Bovard, a son of the late Elmer “Mitch” and Anna (Lopushansky) Sphon.  Prior to retirement he was employed for 40 years as a draftsman for the former Robertshaw Controls Company in Youngwood and New Stanton.  He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg, and a social member of Bovard Firemen’s Club.  He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.  Ike was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served in Korea with the 839th Engineering Battalion as a construction draftsman.  He attended Bovard Grade School and graduated from Greensburg High School in 1950.  In high school, he lettered in football and baseball.  He was honored when he was selected as a first team guard on the 1949 Pennsylvania all-state football team.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine “Rena” (Borgna) Sphon in 1981; and his son, Thomas E. Sphon in 2015.  He is survived by his sons, John M. Sphon and wife, Donna, of Greensburg, and James J. Sphon, of Southwest Greensburg; grandsons, Taylor C. Sphon and wife Kaitlyn, of Washington, D.C., Nathaniel J. “Nate” Sphon, of Phoenix, AZ, and Lucas B. Sphon, of Pittsburgh; great-granddaughter, Ellison B. Sphon; brothers, Stephen E. “Bud” Sphon, of Bovard, and Richard J. Sphon and wife Judy, of Painted Post, NY; nieces, Ann Nicholson (Barry), of Painted Post, NY, Susan Hoobler (Ray), of Horseheads, NY, and Jennifer Corbey (Brian), of Charlottesville, VA; and several other beloved family members.  Honoring Ike’s request, there will be no public visitation.  All services and interment are private.  LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg is assisting with arrangements.  If desired, a memorial contribution may be made to the Westmoreland Hospital/Frick Hospital Foundation, the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation, or Excela Health Home Care and Hospice.  The family would like to thank the physicians and staff at Excela Health Westmoreland and Latrobe Hospitals for their wonderful care and compassion.  www.bachafh.com
