John Yagla Obituary

John Yagla, 90, of Bovard, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Redstone Highlands Skilled Nursing Facility in Greensburg.  He was born August 8, 1933, in Dunbar, a son of the late John and Mary (Szewaryk) Yagla and was the youngest of five brothers and three sisters.  John was a 1951 graduate from Dunbar High School.  He was a standout high school football player, team MVP, and voted Fayette All-County after his debut season his senior year.  He continued to play college football for Chattanooga University and Waynesburg University.  John served in the US Army and was stationed in Yuma, Arizona during the Korean conflict.   He later went on to work and retired from the Union Railroad in Monroeville after 30 years of service.

John was very athletic and played several sports including football, baseball, bowling, and later golf with his sons.  He loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, along with sitting on his back porch observing all the wildlife in his beautiful backyard.  John was a great storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor.  He always enjoyed a good laugh with family, friends, and co-workers.  As John put it, he liked to keep things on the lighter side.

In addition to his parents and siblings, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years Bertha “Lovie” (Haynackie) Yagla.  He is survived by his four loving children Marjorie Price (Jacques) of Apple Valley, Minn, John Yagla (Nancy) of Irwin, Richard Yagla (Kimberly) of Greensburg, and Barbara Shaffer (Tim) of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren Bradley Yagla (Lauren), Marissa Garin (Matt), Ashley Yagla (Jordan Smith), Kristyn Sprague (Andrew), Brianne Price, Jacquelyn Shaffer, and Ryan Shaffer; four great grandchildren Lillian Yagla, Jana Yagla, Isabel Garin, and Kendall Garin; along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the LEO M.
