James Gilbert “Gib” Gray, 91, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born on March 8, 1934, in Derry, a son of the late John E.D. and Agnes Gertrude (Bridge) Gray.
Gib worked for Kroger for 26 years, and ended his second career with Prudential, working until retirement age. But retirement wasn’t for him. He worked at Wilkinson Nursery until age 85, where he found fulfillment using his knowledge of plants, working outdoors, and assisting others.
He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg where he served mass several times a week.
Gib’s greatest joy was spending time with family. He loved hunting with his sons, sporting events, and travel. He made friends everywhere he went and was gifted with wit and humor. He loved making people laugh. He will be missed by all who met him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis (Betts) Gray; and his siblings, John A. Gray, Regis Gray, infant twin sisters, Joseph “Fred” Gray, Paul Gray, Patricia (Gray) Hillman, and Jane (Gray) Svetahor.
He is survived by three children, Colleen (Gray) Holnaider and husband Christopher, Kevin E. Gray and wife Monica, and Keith A. Gray and Cheryl; five grandchildren, Briana (Rosensteel) Flynn and fiancé Matt Werner, Haley (Rosensteel) Schmitt and husband Kyle, James “Jim” Gray and wife Casie, Nick Gray and partner Brian Hempel, and Kevin “Alex” Gray; six great grandchildren, Aisley and Reid Flynn, Kacey Schmitt, Delaney Werner, and Luna and Mia Gray; his great great grandson and namesake, Grayson Sirnic; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gib is also survived by his loving wife, Donna (Wertz) Alcorn; her daughters, Lori Hoffner and husband Jack, and Teri Copper and husband Tim; five granddaughters; and four great grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg. Prayers will begin at 9:30 AM Monday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10 AM in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg.
