Gilbert D. Markle, Sr., 96, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born June 27, 1928, in Greensburg, a son of the late Edward and Pearl (Sweitzer) Markle. Gilbert had served a five-year apprenticeship, then went on to work for Fisher Body, General Motors as a pattern maker and foreman for 42 years. He was a proud member of the United States Merchant Marines, serving during World War II. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Freedom and was a member of the SS John W. Brown Society. Gilbert was a founding member of Good Sheperd Lutheran Church, Greensburg and a longtime member of the American Legion Post No. 981, South Greensburg. Gilbert enjoyed traveling with his wife Margaret, golfing in his earlier years, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret R. (DiCriscio) Markle; grandson, David McCormick and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his four children, Gilbert D. Markle, Jr. (Connie), of Ligonier, Pam Elenberger, of Greensburg, Linda McCormick of Pawleys Island, SC, and Dennis J. Markle, of New Stanton; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy DeLoretta and Rebecca Sue May (Fred). Friends will be received from 10 to 11 AM Friday at Good Sheperd Lutheran Church, 502 Fairfield Drive, Greensburg, followed by a funeral service to begin at 11 AM in the church with Pastor Paul Gruesu officiating.
