George Whipkey Obituary

After a full and meaningful life, George Whipkey, 83, of Southwest Greensburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2024. He was born August 30, 1940, to the late Mildred and Donald Whipkey, of Kecksburg. He was a friend to all, and a dedicated husband and father. He is remembered lovingly by his wife of 64 years, Patricia; and two daughters, Cheryl Bryant, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Kimberly Whipkey and son-in-law, Mark Madsen, of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by his brother Donald Whipkey, of Greensburg; sister, Sceola Crossley Graves; and a number of loving nieces, nephews, and faithful friends.

He wore the two proudest uniforms a man could wear. One, as a member of the United States Marine Corps, and the other as a police officer. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 to 1967 during the Vietnam War Era, earning several ribbons and medals. George also was a Sergeant in the Southwest Greensburg Police Department for thirty years.

After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, he worked as a transport driver for Pepsi and Frito-Lay. George and his wife, Pat, owned and operated the Greensburg Car Wash and Detail Shop.

George was an avid car collector. He restored a number of antique cars, specializing in Corvettes. He and his wife were charter members of the National Corvette Restore Society, NCRS, and the local Antique Automobile Club of Latrobe.

George was a member of the local Marine Corp. League No. 834. He was a logistics coordinator for the Westmoreland County Marine Corps Toys for Tots. This operation was near and dear to his heart as they serve thousands of families each year making Christmas a little brighter for the less fortunate children in the area.

He and his wife made homes for many strays, rescued cats and dogs. They were regular volunteers at Action for Animals Humane Society.

Paramount to all of George’s contributions, by far was his dedication, devotion, and love to his family. George has a love for history and nature which he instilled in his family. He provided memorable experiences including quality time playing miniature golf and other outdoor games with his family to meaningful family vacations every year. One of his favorite activities was riding his bicycle.

As per George’s wish, there will be no viewing or services at this time. The family will be hosting a Celebration of George’s Life at a future date. LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg is assisting with the arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George’s name to Action for Animals Humane Society or a humane society of your choosing. www.bachafh.com
