Dr. Robert Skovira Obituary

Dr. Robert J. Skovira, 83, of Coraopolis, died Thursday, July 16, 2026, in AHN Sewickley Hospital.  He was born May 4, 1943, in Mount Pleasant, a son of the late Robert J., Sr. and Genevieve (Budny) Skovira.  Bob was a graduate of Saint Vincent Preparatory School, Latrobe and earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Saint Vincent College, Latrobe.  He earned two master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in Classics and Information Science, and his doctorate degree in Foundations of Education. 

Bob began his career teaching at Greensburg Central Catholic High School where he also coached wrestling.  Prior to retirement three years ago, he was a University Professor teaching undergraduate and graduate students at Robert Morris University in the Department of Computer and Information Science.  His teaching focus included Java programming, ethical issues in computing, web development, and knowledge management.  He was also the faculty sponsor of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and was an advisor to the student chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.  His years as an educator spanned 43 years in the United States and multiple occasions as a visiting professor at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. 

Bob was recipient of the 2015 IACIS Computer Educator of the Year and has written more than 90 published articles.  He was also co-host of “The Doctor Is In”, a medical variety show on local television.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Josef; his sister, Ellen Eisaman; and his Godson and nephew, Dwayne Skovira. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary E. (Machuga) Skovira.  Bob and Mary were the first couple to be married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Acme on August 21, 1971.  He is also survived by his beloved daughter, Suzanne Kozup (Benjamin); three grandchildren who he adored, Maya, Benjamin, Jr., and Luke Robert Kozup; two brothers, John and Donald Skovira; two aunts, several cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his beloved cat, Appleblossom. 

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg.  Prayers will begin at 9:30 AM Monday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy to be celebrated at 10 AM in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Greensburg.  Interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.  Parastas will take place at 3:30 PM Sunday in the funeral home.  www.bachafh.com
