Darrell E. Smith, 90, of Unity Township, died Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at his home. He was born March 10, 1933 in Latrobe, a son of the late Earl E. and Minerva J. (Tantlinger) Smith. Darrell was a career serviceman with the US Army Air Force having served during both the Korean War and Vietnam War. In addition to his military career he was a farmer and loved his tractors. He was a member of American Legion Post #515, Latrobe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Donna F. Mehalic and Theda Ulishney and his brother George W. “Bill” Smith. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara J. (Gibson) Smith, 5 children, Tina Thiel (Don) of Greensburg, Robby Smith of Portland, Ore., Von Smith (Sherry) of Port St. John’s, FL, Marc Smith (Flo) of Latrobe and Kimberly Degennaro (Richard) of Alabama, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service with military honors by South Greensburg American Legion Post #981 Honor Guard and interment was held in Hillview Cemetery, Hempfield Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Wayward Whiskers Animal Rescue, 159 E. Otterman St., Greensburg, PA 15601. LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., Pleasant Unity, in charge of arrangements.
