Joseph J. Sowansky, Sr.

Joseph J. Sowansky, Sr., 87, of Unity Township, died Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.  He was born July 28, 1931 in Whitney, a son of the late Anthony F. Sr. and Anna M. (Pavel) Sowansky.  Prior to retirement he worked at Pittsburgh Aluminum Alloys in Murrysville and also worked for the Karfang Family at The Pond Restaurant in Latrobe.  Joe was a US Army veteran and member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Whitney.  He loved gardening and the outdoors and grew his plants from seeds.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy M. (Goodman) Sowansky, 2 brothers, Anthony F. Jr. and Francis J. Sowansky, and his sister, Cecelia Poponick.  He is survived by his son:  Dr. Joseph J. Sowansky, Jr., OD and wife Rose of Meadville, his daughter:  Lori Ann Sowansky of Unity Township; 2 grandchildren:  Stephen Patrick and Jessica Marie; and several nieces and nephews.  Visitation will be private.  Friends are invited to a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Whitney, with The Rev. James F. Podlesny, O.S.B. as celebrant.  Please go directly to the church.  Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township.  Leo M.
