Frank DeCarlo Obituary

Frank J. DeCarlo, of Hempfield Twp., passed peacefully Monday, July 9, 2018, after an extended illness. He is dearly missed by his wife and partner in life, Evelyn (Erickson) DeCarlo of nearly 65 years. Frank met Evelyn in Minneapolis, MN, while serving in the Air Force. He was a Staff Sgt. in charge of jet engine maintenance during the Korean Conflict. Prior to his transfer to March Air Force Base, California, Frank and Evie wed in the chapel at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.  After discharge, they moved back east to Frank’s hometown of Philadelphia.  Frank made furniture for their first house. What began as necessity grew into a life-long hobby of fine woodworking and creating beautiful pieces for family and friends. Accepting an offer from IDL, Inc., Frank moved his family to the Pittsburgh area. He began as a commercial artist and progressed to Sales Manager. Many of his corporate clients became good friends, along with childhood friends, Air Force buddies, neighbors and family. Frank remained active in retirement, biking and golfing until losing his vision to macular degeneration. Even so, he would memorize sounds and directions, and could direct Evie when going out. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rose (Giunta) DeCarlo; brother, Joseph; sister, Norma Ranieri Pye; and his son, Frank V. DeCarlo. Along with his wife, Frank is survived by his daughter, Diane Giansante (Steve Spear) of Beaver; daughter-in-law, Michele DeCarlo, of Freeport; cherished grandsons, Chris DeCarlo, of Chicago, and Sean DeCarlo, of Freeport; brother-in-law, Harry Pye; sister-in-law, Inge Goerlich; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Philly and Minnesota. There will be no visitation. Frank will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, MN, in a private ceremony. The family will host a celebration of Frank’s life later this summer. Details will be shared at that time.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland County Food Bank, the Humane Society of Westmoreland County or Excela Hospice.  The DeCarlo family extends many thanks to the caring nurses and aides of Excela Hospice.
