Alma R. Hood

Alma R. Hood, 96, of Greensburg, departed this life to be received into the arms of her Lord on Friday, March 16, 2018.  Alma had a passion for serving others through involvement in her many church activities, including starting prayer shawl ministries that brought comfort to people connected to many area churches.  She will be remembered for her generosity in how she shared her talents in crafts and delicious baking.  Her greatest joy was giving her time and attention to the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren she loved.  She was born February 25, 1922 in Jamison 20, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Eleanor (Brant) Mertz.  She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Greensburg, Friendship Circle of the church, Ladies Guild of the church and Red Hat Ladies.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Hood in 1983; her son, Larry P. Hood in 2015; three sisters, Esther Fultz, Mildred Klingensmith and Violet Resslar; and her brother, Captain Edward P. Mertz.  She is survived by two daughters, Drenda J. Conn and husband James, of Scottdale and Elizabeth Schadle and husband Gary, of Greensburg; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Hood, of Greensburg; seven grandchildren, Greg Conn, Melissa Wisniewski, Amy Hood, Kimberly Howard, Amanda Kanouff, Laura Sasala and Paul Ryan Schadle; 13 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Jacob, Kristin, Kathryn, Zachary, Noah, Hannah, Corrin, Anna, Ella, Isaac, Ava and Luke; and many nieces and nephews.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg.  A funeral service will begin at 11 AM Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas C. Shirer, a friend of the family, officiating.  Interment will follow in Hillview Cemetery, Greensburg.  The family would like to give a special thanks to Vivian Keslar from Senior Helpers, the caregivers at Easy Living Country Estates and Redstone Hospice.  Memorial gifts may be given to the First United Church of Christ, Greensburg.  www.bachafh.com
